Meet Dr. Avron Heyman

Emergency Department Physician

Together with Health PEI and the Department of Health and Wellness, we’re pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Avron Heyman.

Dr. Heyman is from Johannesburg, Africa, and recently moved with his family to PEI. He is an Emergency Department physician at Western Hospital. His recruitment was largely made possible through the efforts of a colleague already living and working on PEI.

Dr. Heyman recently took a few minutes to answer some questions so you could get to know him better.

What are three adjectives you would use to describe yourself?

Passionate, empathetic, and sociable

Tell us a little about yourself

I was born in Johannesburg, Africa, and moved to Cape Town, South Africa, in 2015. I attended the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and my last place of practice and role was at Tableview Medicross, which is a Family Medicine practice in Cape Town. Prior to 2015, and for over 17 years, I worked as an Emergency Medicine physician with Dr. Rustie Maloney in
Johannesburg in Netcare hospitals.

Tell us about your family

I am truly blessed with the most wonderful family. My wife is a trauma-trained registered nurse (in process of getting her qualifications verified by NNAS). Hopefully, she can work in her profession in the near future. She is also an ultra-marathon runner and avid hiker who climbed Table Mountain weekly with her hiking club. My oldest daughter Hannah (13) is a top student with a passion for designing clothes and the idea of owning a Porsche one day. Kaelin (11) is an avid rollerblader and Youtube enthusiast. The twins are 6 years old. Tristan is a kind soul with a passion for Thomas the Train and his twin sister Carys is the second naughtiest in her grade R class and has a will that would conquer Thanos.

What made you choose PEI as your new home to practice medicine?

Dr. Rustie Maloney and family

What was the hardest part of making the decision to move?

Leaving beautiful, sunny Cape Town with mountains, winelands, and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

What impact are you hoping to have on your patients and PEI?

To practice my honourable profession with dedication, excellence, and the passion it deserves. I have always been able to find the most wonderful job satisfaction in my work. When you love your work, it shines through to your patients in your service delivery.

What is your proudest life accomplishment?

Being a proud father to four wonderful, individual, quirky kids who will make this world a better place.

What is one “fun fact” about you?

I have a fetish for fancy decorated socks (LOL). It is my only fashion statement. When I feel a bit overwhelmed, I wear my socks with a lemon pattern and remind my patients that when life gives you lemons…make lemonade

Do you have any questions for Islanders?

● How do I earn my “stripes” and become an Islander?
● Which ice hockey team do I support?
● Best brand of peanut butter on the Island?
● What are snow-chains?
● What local eateries in Summerside and surrounding areas do you recommend?
● Where do I get the best ice cream?
