RESOLUTION FORM
MEDICAL SOCIETY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
MOTION: That the Medical Society of PEI request the Minister of Health to pledge their commitment to the banning of the use of artificial tanning equipment for those 18 years and younger and call for increased regulation for owners and operators.
MOVER: Dr. Gerald O’Hanley
SECONDER: Dr. Billy Scantlebury
1. SUBSTANTIVE RATIONALE (why consider this motion at the AGM) AND SUPPORTIVE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE (especially for scientific/clinical motion).
- The health of all Islanders is impacted by rising incidents of skin cancer.
- The health of all Islanders, particularly youth and young adults, is at risk with increased exposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that no person under the age of 18 be allowed to use a tanning bed because of health risks.
- A provincial ban of artificial tanning equipment use by those 18 years will assist in reducing the overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, equipment designed to expose people to harmful radiation which can cause skin cancer.
- Artificial tanning equipment is accessible and unregulated within Prince Edward Island, owners and operators should be required to partake in training and registration.
