Summer Education Program for Medical Students

This program is designed to provide the undergraduate medical student with exposure to a variety of medical practice experiences, including exposure to rural family practice. It is intended that this experience will assist students in their career choice and, in addition, the program is designed to encourage recruitment of new physicians to the province.

Student members of the Medical Society of PEI are eligible to participate in the program each year. Medical students from Prince Edward Island are given priority provided they meet the criteria. The number of student participants is determined by funding.

Medical students having completed the second year of undergraduate training will have the opportunity to participate in the program. If space is available once all second year students applying have been placed, then first year students will be considered for the program.

The program spans ten weeks between the period of early June and mid August. The CEO of the Medical Society, with the assistance of the physician coordinator, will arrange a schedule of experience for each student which will include at a minimum the following areas: Rural Family Practice, Surgery, Pediatrics, Laboratory Medicine, Radiology, and a variety of community health experiences such as Addictions, Mental Health, Home Care, etc. Where possible, additional experiences will be provided in areas of special interest as identified by the student. Obstetrical, emergency room and psychiatry experiences will be provided whenever possible.
