154th Annual General Meeting of Medical Society of PEI

Stanhope, PEI

Dr. Triantafillou, known to many simply as “Dr. T,” received his medical education at the National University of Athens, Greece, and completed his psychiatry residency from the University of Birmingham, England.  He obtained DPM from the University of London and his LAH from Dublin University, becoming fully licensed in the UK.

Moving to Canada in the early 70\\\\\\\'s, Dr. Triantafillou practised in the Province of Saskatchewan before moving to PEI. In 1978 Dr. Triantafillou became a member of Prince County Hospital medical staff providing consulting psychiatry services. He became full-time at PCH in 1984 and was appointed Chief of Staff in 1990 and Regional Medical Director in 1994. In January 2001 Dr Triantafillou accepted his current roles of consulting psychiatrist at McGill Community Mental Health in Charlottetown and Director of Mental Health for the province.

Throughout his career, Dr. T’s positions included Director of Mental Health for PEI; Clinical Director at Hillsborough Hospital, Charlottetown; Provincial Director of Addiction Services; member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Medical Association; and Member in Council for management and economics for the Canadian Psychiatric Association.

Elected President of the Medical Society of PEI in June 1999, Dr. ‘T’ served the organization for five years as a member of the Board of Directors, and also on the Negotiations Committee and the Joint Consultation Committee (JCC) focusing on provincial medical services.

His sound understanding of community-based mental health programs and a proven track record for delivering psychiatry services using an interdisciplinary approach has made Dr. T a true asset to the province. Three years ago, Dr. T scaled back his clinical work and is now Chair of the provincial committee tasked with integrating the Island’s mental health care services including Community Mental Health, Addiction Services, and In-patient Psychiatric Services.

Practicing what he knows about good mental health, Dr. Triantafillou strives to achieve professional and personal life balance. Married to Donna, he has two married sons Lucas, a school teacher in B.C. and Alexis, an RCMP officer in PEI. He is grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren. He enjoys golfing and summers at the cottage. In the winter he catches up on reading.
