RESOLUTION
MEDICAL SOCIETY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2009

MOTION: That the Medical Society of PEI work collaboratively with like-minded organizations in the promotion of Active Transport in PEI as defined by the Canadian Medical Association policy outline on Active Transportation; that is, any human-powered form of transportation. In particular, that a strategy be developed to identify ways to make cycling a safe, convenient, and practical way to get around.

MOVER:        Dr. Jennifer Zelin
SECONDER:    Dr. Gerald O’Hanley

1.     SUBSTANTIVE RATIONALE (why consider this motion at the AGM) AND SUPPORTIVE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE (especially for scientific/clinical motion).

•    The environment is a determinant of good health. Reducing the levels of pollution from motorized forms of transportation will aid in the prevention of disease and illness. Cycling can be an efficient seasonal transportation alternative for many Islanders.

•    Major diseases impacting on the quality and quantity of life of all Canadians are linked to physical inactivity. Islanders need communities that make is easy to be physically active, including cycling.

•    A key component to achieving high levels of cycling is safety to decrease the current risk of injury.
